Only Similarity Is Ours emerged along with Zhao Yang's decision to become a professional artist. He chose to print the image onto the canvas in advance, which set an obstacle for him in a sense, and then covered and re-painted the canvas – to search for new possibilities lying in the process of artistic creation. The words at the bottom right corner of the painting were written down by the artist in 2013, marking the completion of the work.
